Planning to boat abroad this year? The International Certificate of Competency for Operators of Pleasure Craft is an internationally recognised qualification that confirms a skipper’s practical boat handling and navigation skills when operating recreational craft outside their home country.
In Ireland, the certificate is issued by Irish Sailing under the authority of the Department of Transport, with oversight from the Marine Survey Office. It is widely accepted by harbour authorities and charter companies across Europe and is commonly required in countries that apply UNECE Resolution 40.
The certificate can be obtained through a direct assessment at an accredited Irish Sailing Training Centre, providing a practical route for experienced boaters. It may also be issued through recognition of relevant Irish Sailing competency certificates awarded within the past five years, including National Powerboat Certificate and Day Skipper qualifications.
Holding an International Certificate of Competency helps ensure compliance with local regulations when boating abroad and provides confidence to authorities and operators that recognised standards of competence have been met.
