COURTOWN SAILING CLUB - WOMEN IN SPORT GRANT 2025

On the 23rd of August, Courtown Sailing Club hosted the inaugural Women Take the Helm race — an initiative designed to promote female participation and leadership within the club’s cruiser fleet. Six women, most of whom were dinghy instructors with limited cruiser experience, were each assigned to a cruiser and given full responsibility at the helm.

The event proved to be a great success. With ideal weather conditions of 15–18 knots and calm seas, all participants enjoyed a fun and confidence-building afternoon on the water. The race fostered new skills, teamwork, and a supportive environment for women to take on new challenges in sailing.

Following the race, a club barbecue was held, where — in a fun twist — the men took charge of the cooking duties. The evening provided an enjoyable social atmosphere with great food and plenty of laughs, reinforcing the community spirit behind the initiative.

Later in the season, at the annual dinner dance, the club’s original Lady Skipper trophies were reintroduced and proudly presented to the winners of Class 1 and Class 2. This revived tradition was warmly received and highlighted the club’s renewed commitment to celebrating women sailors.

Given the positive feedback and level of enthusiasm, Women Take the Helm will now become a regular annual event at Courtown Sailing Club, continuing to support and encourage women’s involvement in the sport.
