The Irish Team Racing National Championships return to Schull, Co. Cork this weekend brining together 19 of the country's top teams...
Expected to be at the forefront of the action are Baltimore Sailing Club and the George Jesters, two teams whose rivalry has defined the past two championships. The Jesters took the title in 2023 and Baltimore in 2024. Both finals going the full five races in nail-biting showdowns that showcased the very best of Irish team racing. With neither side giving an inch and both arriving in top form, it’s anyone’s guess who will emerge on top this time around.
The George Jesters bring added pedigree after their runner-up finish at the Wilson Trophy earlier this year, the best Irish result ever at the prestigious UK event, while Baltimore SC carry the confidence of a World Championship bronze medal success, no doubt both teams will arrive with serious intention.
They’ll face strong competition from 420 National Champion Daniel Copithorne and his fellow rising stars from Schull Community College, fresh off their national schools title and racing on home waters, as well as an experienced lineup featuring Olympian and World Sailing Grand Slam winter Finn Lynch who has teamed up with Squib National Champion and former Intervarsity winner Micheál Ó Súilleabháin whose team are expected to be the underdog to watch out for.
Last year’s event bronze medallists, American Tragic, led by former event winner Dan Little, also return with unfinished business and a reputation for delivering under pressure.
Adding further depth to the field, Harry Twomey’s Trinity College Dublin, the current Intervarsity Champions, will look to continue their fine form against senior opposition, joined by strong university contingents from University College Cork (UCC) and University College Dublin (UCD) and Technological University Dublin (TUD) — both of whom boast a proud tradition in team racing and plenty of talent in their lineups.
With brisk October breezes forecast and Schull Harbour providing its signature natural amphitheatre, this year’s Nationals promise top-class competition, tactical intensity, and the kind of drama that makes this event a highlight of the Irish sailing season.
