Join Ireland’s Most Competitive One-Design Keelboat Fleet
The J/24 is calling for new teams to step aboard and experience one of the most competitive and affordable keelboat classes in the world.
In recent years, the Irish J/24 fleet has become one of the strongest worldwide, producing some of the highest standards of one-design racing. Most notably, Irish team Headcase - three-time European Champions - made history this year by becoming the first Irish crew ever to win the J/24 World Championship.
As the most mass-produced keelboat in the world, the J/24 comes with unique advantages: a wealth of freely available tuning guides, training videos, and international knowledge to shorten the learning curve. Add to that a large market for second-hand boats, sails, and spare parts, and you have an accessible, proven platform for sailors of all levels.
The J/24 has long been the boat where many professional sailors cut their teeth - and where many still race today. With active European and World Championships, as well as a thriving Irish circuit, there are opportunities for sailors to compete at every level. Now, the class is looking to welcome the next wave of teams ready to take on the challenge.
Who is the J/24 Class for?
- Existing teams – Crews from classes such as the J/109, Half / Quarter Tonner, J/80,1720, SB20, Squib, Impala 28, Sigma 33, Puppeteer, and Ruffian 23 looking for a fun, affordable challenge will find the J/24 an ideal step into highly tactical keelboat racing.
- U25 teams – The J/24 has proven a powerful platform for youth success, with standout U25 squads from Howth, Kinsale, Foynes, and Sligo making their mark in recent seasons. ICRA provide considerable funding for the U25 programme, which is still available for 2026.
- Ambitious club racers – For sailors keen to move beyond club racing and join a competitive regional and national circuit, the J/24 offers a clear, accessible pathway.
What to Expect
- Active calendar – 3/4 regional championships each year plus Nationals, with the option to race at Europeans and Worlds. J/24 also rate favourably on IRC should you wish to race open regattas.
- Training & support – Pro coaching opportunities are planned for 2026, alongside strong camaraderie and knowledge-sharing within the fleet at every event.
- Value for money – Entry fees are typically around €150, including lifting, and often camping options are provided by clubs, making attendance to regattas affordable for all.
- Charter opportunities – Boats are available to charter on request, giving new teams the chance to experience the class before committing to ownership.
- Boats to buy – With an estimated 70 J/24s in Ireland, there are options to suit a wide range of budgets and ambitions (the class have a directory of boats available).
Inclusive & Competitive
The J/24 Class is proud of its strong female representation, with many women competing in mixed and all-female teams at the highest level. The fleet is recognized for being both fiercely competitive on the water and supportive ashore - creating an environment where teams of all backgrounds can thrive.
