Midway Performance Update – U21 World Championships

Irish Sailing Development Sailors Showing Strong Progress

At the halfway point of the U21 World Championships, Irish development sailors are showing encouraging form in what has been a challenging and competitive week on Dublin Bay. With three days of racing completed and three to go, the Irish team is well-positioned heading into the final series.

Sienna Wright (Howth Yacht Club) continues to impress in the ILCA6 fleet, currently sitting in 13th overall out of 70 competitors. Sienna delivered a standout performance in the opening series with two third-place finishes, combined with consistent mid-fleet results. A promising showing from this young sailor as she heads into the final races, holding her own against some of the best U21 talent globally.

Lucy Ives (Royal St. George YC) also competing in the ILCA6 class, holds 25th overall in the 70-boat fleet. With no gold/silver split for the women’s fleet they will continue to race as one fleet for the finals series.

In the ILCA7 (men’s) fleet, Fiachra McDonnell (Royal Irish YC) made an early statement with a race win (bullet) on the opening day. He currently sits 17th out of 130 boats while teamate Tom Coulter (East Antrim BC) , also part of the Irish Sailing Development Team, currently sits in 57th place. Both Fiachra and Tom progress into the gold fleet as the men's fleet splits from tommorw, a valuable step as they progress at this stage in their careers.

Racing conditions so far have tested every aspect of the sailors’ skills. Varying from light flat seas today to yesterdays extreme winds and towering waves. Forecasts suggest 15-18 knots for the remainder of the week. So with three days of competition remaining, Irish sailors are well-placed to continue learning and competing at a high level.
