DUNGARVAN SAILING CLUB CELEBRATES 80 YEARS

Dungarvan Sailing Club is celebrating a significant milestone this year, marking 80 years since the club was founded in August 1946.

Established by a small group of sailing enthusiasts at a public meeting in Dungarvan Town Hall on Friday 2 August 1946, the club has grown steadily over eight decades into a vibrant and welcoming community organisation at the heart of sailing and water-based activity in West Waterford.

Today, the club supports sailors of all ages and experience levels, while continuing to reflect the area’s strong maritime heritage and long-standing connection with the sea.

Commodore Austin Flynn highlighted the important role the harbour and club continue to play within the local community, noting Dungarvan’s historic identity as a busy trading port and its modern reputation as an attractive destination for visitors and water users alike.

Over the years, the club has seen significant development, including the construction of its purpose-built clubhouse on the Quay, the expansion of pontoon facilities for visiting and local boats, and the growth of a successful training centre programme. The club now introduces more than 180 sailors to the water each year, the majority of whom are children and young people.

Celebrations to mark the anniversary will take place throughout the weekend and will include sailing races for cruisers and dinghies, a photographic exhibition, talks on the club and harbour history, an angling competition, children’s crab fishing events, the annual blessing of the boats, and social celebrations at the clubhouse.

Irish Sailing congratulates all the volunteers, members and generations of sailors who have contributed to the continued success of Dungarvan Sailing Club over the past 80 years. The club’s strong sense of community, volunteerism and commitment to developing sailing locally stands as an excellent example of the strength of club sailing across Ireland.
