The Champions Cup

Irish Sailing's Champions Cup has a long and celebrated history on this Island.

In 2022 Irish Sailing celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Helmsman’s Championship, and to mark this, renamed the competition as the Irish Sailing Champions’ Cup to reflect the more inclusive times we live in. At the same time, we took the opportunity to update the nomination criteria for better female representation. This led to a number of changes to the nomination criteria for selection of the 16 places. including two places for female helms based on finishing results at selected qualifying events, one place for a host boat nominee, and a “President’s Choice” wildcard nominee.

In parallel, the Junior Champions’ Cup nomination criteria was also changed to include two places for female helms and a President’s Choice wildcard nominee.

We recently shot a short film showing a brief history of the Irish Sailing Champions’ Cup since its inception in 1947. The film also features interviews with some of its past winners who talk about its enduring legacy and importance.
