Training Scheme Workshop
The week of November 13th saw the delivery of a series of training workshops in Dublin, Cork and Castlebar by Irish Sailing Training Development Officer, Dave Garvey.
The focus of the workshops was on planning and facilitating the development of instructors at all levels with particular emphasis on reducing costs and encouraging progression to Advanced and Senior Instructor levels. Although the majority of the focus was on the Small Boat Sailing Scheme it was identified there was a lot of cross over with the Powerboat and windsurfing schemes.
Despite the darkening evenings (and a World Cup play-off) there was a great attendance at the workshops from a wide range of Irish Sailing organisations, both club and commercial. There was plenty of productive input from the attendees with some very useful suggestions being put forward. There was also general agreement that there was room for a greater level of communication and co-operation between organisations at a local level particularly in facilitating the acquisition of instructor pre-requisites.
Feedback from the workshops was reviewed by Harry Hermon (CEO), Brian Craig (Board) and Dave Garvey as well as at a meeting of the Irish Sailing Instructor Trainer panel. As a follow up to this we are now planning a series of Senior Instructor regional workshops in Spring 2018 to ensure that the same message is being carried right the way through Irish Sailing organisations.
