After a frustrating wait in dead calm conditions on day 2 of racing the sailors were treated to a perfect 20knots of breeze in the final races. It was thrilling to watch Ireland’s top sailors from each class compete in the fantastic National 18 dinghies. These lively racing machines saw top sailors tipping over and “dunking” the crew on many a crucial tack. Annalise Murphy and crew gave an outstanding performance with 3 bullets in the final 3 races and the final winner was not clear until judges and race officer had done the maths on discards. RS400 sailor, Alex Barry from Monkstown Bay Sailing Club came out top with 11 points, with Annalise Murphy only one point behind on 12 and Darragh O’Sullivan, who had dominated the board throughout the afternoon, came in at 3rd with an equal 12 points, because Annalise had 3 bullets to Darragh’s 2. Truly spectacular sailing by everyone. Race Officer Peter Crowley ran a tight ship with 20 minute races and fast turnaround keeping everyone on their toes and out on the wire.
This weekend’s top sailors came from a broad spectrum of classes RS400, Laser Radial, Laser Full Rig, National 18, ICRA 1, 2 & 3, 1720, IDRA14, RS200, J24, Mermaid, Shannon One Design and Flying Fifteen.
What is the ISA Senior All Ireland Championships and How does it work?
To help explain the event to those that would be new to the ISA Senior All Ireland Championships – National Champions from adult keelboat and dinghy classes are invited to compete. Each helm choose their own crew and this year a represented from the National 18 class crewed on the wire. The fleet of dinghies are privately owned in Royal Cork Yacht Club and special thanks must go out to the owners for allowing their boats to be used in this prestigious event, each sailor was most appreciative.
With 16 entries and 8 boats the ISA Senior All Ireland Championship was split in to two flights, with 3 races each on Day 1. Day 2 started with sailors from places 4, 5, 6 & 7 in flight one and two, in a repechage of 2 races. Final racing then continues with the top 2 from repechage. Points from the flight races 1, 2 and 3 are carried forward and 8 boats race 4, 5, 6 & 7.
