Message from David O’Brien upon election as President
I am indeed honoured and privileged to be elected as President of Irish Sailing today, and I thank the board, but in particular outgoing President Jack Roy, for their confidence in me to carry out this prestigious function. It is a special honour, as a past Admiral of Royal Cork, to hold this position during their 300th anniversary celebration year.
Jack has given a tremendous amount of time and commitment to the sport of sailing over many years. As an International Race Officer he has been all around the country and abroad officiating at events large and small, and has the distinction of being the first Irish Race Officer at an Olympic Event when he was involved in London 2012 games. He has served on many Irish Sailing committees and has been a superb leader over the years.
It is disappointing that the members of Irish Sailing cannot have the opportunity to thank Jack personally and officially at this year’s AGM, as a printed message does not adequately convey the warmth and immense gratitude due to himself, and Rosemary, for many years in the forefront of so many aspects of our sport, and especially the past three years as President. Hopefully we will get the opportunity to rectify this in the coming months.
I hope you both enjoy many years cruising, without distraction, in home and distant waters – though it find it hard to promise not to make a few calls for help!
I also would like to take this opportunity to thank the other retiring members of the board, Sarah Byrne, Paddy McGlade and Pat Donnelly for all their valuable work.
Our sport today is in a unique and challenging time, with many hours, weeks, and months of planning by so many volunteers, lost due to cancellation of events, with others in limbo as we wait the progress of COVID- 19. Irish Sailing will continue to monitor the Department of Health & HSE guidelines and keep members up-dated on email, social media, Afloat, and our website. Please check these regularly.
I look forward to working with the board, and staff during the coming year and hope that we can all get on the water again soon. Meanwhile stay safe and healthy.
David O’Brien 21st March 2020.
