Noelle Doran Founder of Professional Coaching Services & the WORLDS Fastest 500m Windsurfer
Second eldest of nine Children, & brought up on a farm in Co Kildare, who would of thought that Noelle Doran would become one of Ireland’s top coaches in watersports.
I took up watersports in 1986 when I commenced a 2 year outdoor education course in Colaiste Dhulaigh, Coolock, Dublin. This was a life changing experience for me & I have never looked back since. Despite having no previous experience at any of the sports, I was the only student to be awarded a certificate with distinction.
I pursued a career in windsurfing, sailing, powerboating instructing & coaching and quickly progressed to management level becoming the youngest sailing centre manager in Europe, where I held the position of Glenan’s sailing centre manager(Chef De Base) for several years in Collanmore Island, Clew Bay, Co Mayo.
In this period Glenan’s was recognised as the leading school for teaching all levels of sailing & windsurfing. We taught on all types of craft, Catamarans, Dinghies and Keel boats. Windsurfing was hugely popular back in the 80’s & 90’s, and this was evident when all our equipment (30 Boards & Rigs) were all in use week after week.
Commitments including living abroad and pursuing other career paths meant that a break from instructing/coaching was forced upon me from 1994 – 1999. Since then I have re-entered the scene with both the enthusiasm & passion that never left me.
I spent 2-3 years re-validating and up skilling qualifications in all of the above mentioned disciplines
I graduated as an ISA Instructor Trainer, when I successfully completed the Coach Tutor course with Coaching Ireland in University of Limerick.
I was encouraged to enter the windsurfing competitions circuit in 2004 by a good friend of mine Oisin Van Gelderan. To date I have held 11 Irish National Ladies Windsurfing championship in Waves, Freestyle and Speed disciplines and in 2008 a world ranking of 6th fastest lady in the ISWC (International Speed World Cup).
But the high light has to be when on the 8th of Dec. 2011
A New Women’s and Men’s Irish Records for GPS Peak Speeds were made by Surfdock Team-riders
Noelle Doran (38.17knots) and Oisin van Gelderen (47.88knots).
My GPS speeds also put me in:
1st in the GPS World Rankings (2011) for 500m speed.
3rd Overall in the World (2011) for 5×10 sec average.
5th Overall in the World (all years) for 5×10 sec average. What a day to remember.
It has been said that my enthusiasm and passion for the sport coupled with the combination of determination and competitiveness has enabled me to achieve success at both national & international level.
I am currently a Rescue Helm with the Westport Unit of the Irish Coast Guard and feel that this is an ideal way of putting something back into the lifestyle that has given me so much enjoyment over the years.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have helped me throughout my sailing years, not least my sponsors who include Surfdock, Pryde Group UK and JP Australia and look forward to working with and for you in the future.
