Fireball training with Ian Barker
The Irish Fireball class held a superb training weekend June11-12th from the National Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire. With crews travelling from as far as Waterfford to get the most from Ian Barker the 2000 olympic silver medallist in 49ers and present coach to many of the UK’s Olympic hopefuls.
The Saturday was light winds which allowed everyone to perfect their boat handling skills in marginal trapezing conditions. The Sunday was full on with many thrills and a few spills as everyone eventually left the course shattered but confident that they had all learnt lots, but still had more to learn.
The fireball class in Ireland is committed to training running several sessions around the country each year aimed at different levels to help raise the standards of sailing in Ireland.

The Fireball Class will run their third training weekend of the year at the National YC on June 11th-12th.
The class has a significant contingent of its fleet heading off to the UK in August to sail in the European and World Championships in Teignmouth Devon where an entry of at least 140 boats have already entered from more than ten countries on four continents.
It was therefore decided to run a training session for the contenders and the class is delighted to announce the 2000 49er Class Olympic Silver medallist Ian Barker will be running the training.
As well as the 49er success Ian has won Enterprise and 505 world championships and is now a full time coach.
The fireball fleet who are committed to run quality training courses every year open to all their members are hoping that the intense weekend will allow them to improve standards even further.
With turnouts at events constantly above thirty entries and new boats joining the fleet on an ongoing basis the future is looking excellent for the class.
