JUNIOR DINGHY REGATTA SAILS IN SUNSHINE
The Junior Dinghy Regatta at Wicklow Sailing Club took place in glorious sunshine and light variable winds on Saturday 25th August 2007.
18 boats raced in two fleets (gold and silver) under the PY handicap system.
An event that was organised by juniors for juniors, it would not have come together without the careful planning of Jason Moran, Johnny Flood and Sean Doyle. Sean explained, "This seemed like a good way to celebrate the end of the ISA Junior Training.
Sailing Wayfarer 'Madame Vice' (lent by Brian Malone) Jason Moran & Niall Roche were first across the line in the last two races of the day and second in the first. Jason & Niall claimed overall victory in the Gold Fleet after PY was applied and as Jason explained at the BBQ later, "we did shockingly well considering this was our first day in a Wayfarer and our first time to sail together in a two man boat."
Meanwhile the Silver Fleet winner was Topper sailor Anders O'Donoghue who only yesterday completed his ISA level three.
Sponsored by Island Maritime the club hopes that this event will become an annual fixture.
Delighted with the performance of the junior sailors, race Office Barry O'Sullivan commented: "We hope to build on this event and attract more visitors for next year."
