Cork’s O’Leary Family on form at ISA All Ireland Sailing Championship 2008

Nicholas ‘Nin’ O’Leary is the ISA All Ireland Sailing Champion 2008
Philip Doran is the Junior Champion
Tiffany Brien is the Girls Champion
Cork’s O’Leary family was on form at the ISA All Ireland Sailing Championship in Howth Yacht Club this weekend when they placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd.  However it was Match Racing expert Nicholas ‘Nin’ O’Leary who took the title ahead of his father Anthony in 2nd and his brother Peter in 3rd. Peter just back from the Olympics previously won this event in 2006 and 2000.

The Championship was sponsored by Euro Car Parks. At the prize giving Chief Executive David Cullen was heard to say, “When the wind moderated around lunchtime and then the sun came out we had ideal sailing conditions for the event.“

In the Junior & Girl’s competition four races were sailed to provide a clear winner in Philip Doran from Courtown Sailing Club. Discarding a 5th place he counts two race wins and a 2nd place.

When asked how he felt Doran smiled, “Brilliant! Before the weekend I didn’t expect it. We had good sailing with a range of conditions and I got consistent results.

Tiffany Brien (Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club and Ballyholme Yacht Club) was second overall but as the highest placed girl is also the ISA All Ireland Girl Champion.

Tiffany grinned as she explained, “This is my last Junior & Girls. I’m both surprised and delighted to win the Girls Trophy. I’m aimed to be competing against my Dad (Simon Brien) next year.”

Competitors announced for ISA Junior & Girls All Ireland Sailing Championship 2008

The ISA today (2nd October 2008) announced the 21 competitors who will compete in the ISA Junior & Girls All Ireland Sailing Championship 2008 hosted this coming weekend (4th & 5th October 2008) in Howth Yacht Club, Co Dublin. This year’s championship will see Annalise Murphy returning to defend her title (2007 Girl's Champion). After a year of very successful international competitions one can expect a strong performance from Annalise to defend this title. Annalise was 5th in this year’s Laser Radial Youth Worlds.

2007 Junior All Ireland Sailing Champion, Chris Penney, a member of the ISA Youth Academy will also be keen to defend his title however with great depth throughout the fleet he will have much to contend with. One of which will be Ben Lynch who achieved a top ten placing in the ISAF Youth Worlds this year.

With nine strong girl competitors the boys should not expect plain sailing as the girls sail within the Junior fleet and can also win the Junior Title. The Junior & Girls sailing competition begins Saturday morning while the seniors’ fleet will commence on Friday in the J80 SailFleet boats.

Competitors now announced for ISA All Ireland Sailing Championship 2008

Ireland’s premier domestic invitational sailing event to take place this weekend

The ISA today (30th Sept 2008) announced the 24 competitors who will compete in the ISA All Ireland Sailing Championship 2008 hosted this coming weekend (3rd, 4th & 5th October 2008) in Howth Yacht Club, Co Dublin

Ireland's premier domestic invitation sailing event is proudly sponsored by Euro Car Parks and will see the best of Irish sailors compete to be crowned the ISA All Ireland Sailing Champion 2008.

The competitors, who will race in the ISA SailFleet J80 keelboats, were announced by ISA Racing Manager Ed Alcock.

“Stefan Hyde will be keen to defend his title; however the 2007 Champion will have strong competition across the fleet. This includes sailors of the calibre of Timothy Goodbody and Peter O'Leary, fresh from their Olympic Regatta. In fact Peter’s name is already on the trophy as he won the championship in 2006.”

Alcock continued: “The J80’s will be raced with a crew of three. The invited competitors are therefore choosing their best team available making this weekend a showcase of Irish talent on the waters off Howth.”

ISA ALL IRELAND SAILING CHAMPIONSHIP 2008 SPONSORED BY EURO CAR PARKS - Immediate Release (Sailing)

Format of competition

There are a few minor changes to the format of the competitions this year. The senior event will take place over a three day period with the first flight of eight invited competitors sailing in ISA SailFleet J80’s on Friday afternoon. The Junior & Girls competition starts sailing on Saturday morning.

20 races are planned to take place throughout the weekend. Racing will be competitive from the start with scores counting from race one. Race Officers for the event will be David Lovegrove for the senior fleet and Derek Bothwell for the junior & girl’s fleet.

Even though the format of the competition has slightly changed, the winner of the event will be Ireland’s premier sailor and will be awarded the ISA All Ireland Helmsman’s Trophy.

ISA Press Release: 10th September 2008 - Immediate Release (SAILING)

The ISA All Ireland Sailing Championship 2008 will take place on the 3rd, 4th and 5th October in Howth Yacht Club. This invitational competition will include nominees from all ISA Classes and this year’s sailing Olympians. The closing date for classes to nominate their national champions is Monday, 15th September 2008.

The competition will be sailed in the ISA SailFleet J80 keelboats. The invited sailors may choose their own crew for the event. This widens the scope of the event and means more top Irish sailors can compete at the regatta. On the 4th and 5th October at the same venue the Junior & Girls competition will race as one fleet in Laser Radial dinghies.

ISA Racing Manager, Ed Alcock commented; "The ISA have been working very closely with Howth Yacht Club preparing for Ireland's premier domestic competition. We are particularly appreciative that the Club has postponed the Howth Autumn League on Sunday the 5th to facilitate the regatta. We also very much welcome and appreciate the support and sponsorship provided by Eurocarparks."

The event website is which will be updated as the date approaches.
