TOPPER SQUAD TRAINING

The ISA topper squad returned to training last weekend in Kilrush Co. Clare. The squad are a team of ten topper sailors all under 15 years of age.

The cold Light Easterly wind did not create the expected surf on the Shannon Estuary. We stayed inside the Harbour gates to keep away from the strong currents.

Guest speaker and fitness specialist Antoine Brossard took the group on saturday morning to talk and do practicals on fitness, stretching and relaxation.

The weekend provided about 6 hours sailing in light and shifty winds. Sailing focussed on light wind boat handling techniques. Two long races (one each day) were sailed to conclude the sessions.

The first day was won by the youngest squad member Finn Lynch. As the wind died in the middle of the second one, it had to be cancelled. Rory Lynch was leading at the time.
The sailors have now a month to sail in their club and work on their fitness before the squad meet again.

The sailors trained together twice before christmas and are expected to meet 3 or 4 times in the winter-spring period before the season starts. Their major objectives for 2007 are the UK nationals and the worlds (in Italy).
