ISA Emergency Care Training Programme

“Providing training and certification in Emergency Care skills for members of the boating community.”

The following courses are available through ISA Training Centres. Download list at bottom of page.

Course are offered in association with the Academy of Emergency Care in Sport and The Department of Emergency Medicine, Cork University Hospital.

ISA Emergency Care Certificate

Aim
The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to provide emergency care in the marine environment and on inland waterways where professional medical assistance should be available within 30 minutes.

Previous experience or knowledge required;
No previous knowledge or experience is required.

Duration
The ISA Emergency Care Training Course consists of a minimum of 14 hours contact training.  However the length of the course may be extended where it suits, or is necessary, for participants to take a more relaxed approach to the programme.

Validity
Certificates remain valid for 5 years subject to a half day annual refresher module being attended. This will include CPR and protocol updates.  Following a 5 year period –attendance on a full 14 hour course is mandatory.

AED Training Module

Aim
The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to use an Automated External Defibrillator to provide emergency first aid.

Previous experience or knowledge required;
Participants must hold a current First Aid certificate from a course that has included CPR such as the ISA Emergency First Aid Course.

Duration
The AED Training Module will normally consist of a minimum of 6 hours contact training.  However the length of the course may be extended where it suits, or is necessary, for participants to take a more relaxed approach to the programme.

Validity
Certificates are valid for a period of three years after which they may be revalidated by attending a 2 hour re-validation course.  However, the ISA strongly recommends that all First Aiders with AED certification complete an annual CPR refresher course which includes use of AEDs.

Offshore Emergency Care Certificate

Aim
The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to provide medical aid in the marine environment where professional medical assistance is more than 30 minutes away.  This includes offshore and trans oceanic sailors who may be some considerable distance from shore.

This course will be available in Autumn 2008.
