IRL VS THE WORLD MATCH RACE 2010

WORLD-CLASS DUBLIN BAY DOGFIGHTING THIS WEEKEND

A squad of Ireland’s top sailors will take on a panel of international sailing talent in a 90-race dogfight on Dublin Bay this weekend.

The Ireland Vs the World Match Racing Challenge is the first event of its kind in Ireland.  The Royal St. George Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire Co. Dublin, will play host six of the world’s best teams from France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. They’ll take on Ireland’s fastest match racers in one-on-one duels, the same sailing format as used in the greatest prize in sailing, the America’s Cup.

World No. 17 Keith Swinton of Western Australia’s ‘Black Swan Racing’ will captain the international side. Irish No. 1 John Sheehy will lead the home side.

Match Racing involves combative head-to-head racing between two identical boats over short courses, with each boat having 4 crew members and each race lasting a mere 20 minutes. At the end of the competition and after approximately 90 races there will be an overall individual winner.

In addition, the combined scores of the six Irish teams and the six international teams will deliver an overall team winner – Ireland takes on the World!

Racing will be in the spectator friendly Scotsman’s Bay. With Dun Laoghaire’s  East pier on one side the Forty Foot on the other, onlookers will have fantastic access to viewpoints over the racecourse.

The inaugural Match Racing Challenge will be attempting many ‘firsts’ for Irish

sailing.

• Live commentary will be provided over VHF Channel 77.

• The event website www.matchracing.ie/challenge will be updated on a minute by minute basis from the water.

• Spectators will have the opportunity to race onboard with the teams by stepping into the ‘hot seat’ position. When in the ‘hot seat’, the individual will experience the thrills and tension of the race as it happens along with the competitors.

• The event takes place over the same weekend as the Dun Laoghaire festival of World Cultures so crowds of festival goers will be within touching distance of the action with the race course within feet of the shoreline to maximize spectator involvement.
