ISA PRESS RELEASE (SAILING & BOATING): 4th March 2009 - Immediate Release

ISA to launch Guidelines on the Management of Boating Activites as part of a Waterbased Amenity.

ISA to launch resource for Local and Harbour Authorities at National Conference (7th & 8th March, Burlington Hotel, Dublin)

The ISA will launch “Guidelines for the Management of Boating Activities as a part of a Water Based Amenity” at their upcoming National Conference (7th & 8th March, Burlington Hotel, Dublin).

Chief Executive Harry Hermon explained: “Our aim is to help local authorities to promote watersports activity in their county. The ISA is working with decision makers to develop a self regulating infrastructure to support pro active management strategies”

The ISA already offer some of the tools necessary to support the local authorities to manage the waterways within their jurisdiction, such as their Club Development Programme, ISA Training Schemes, the Yachtsman euromarine Insurance package and the Small Craft Register. All of which have been developed by the ISA to help support safe and responsible participation.

Hermon continued: “These guidelines have evolved from working with a number of Local Authorities as they review or introduce bye laws for their waterways. If we provide the awareness and knowledge necessary to help them maximise the use of their local amenities, we are supporting our members and other watersports enthusiasts”

The ISA have noted an increase in the introduction, or planned introduction, of byelaws, which will affect not only their members but all boat users. Last year ISA appointed a full time development officer to support local authorities with the implementation of proactive management strategies aimed at increasing participation in their communities.

Developing Local Watersports Communities is the overall theme of the ISA National Conference, which takes place in the Burlington Hotel on 7th & 8th March 2009.
