Since its launch a number of years ago The Big Event: the unique planning and regatta management manual, has been used, studied and gained the badge of a 'best practice' document in both the UK and Ireland, while raising significant revenue for Meningitis.
Its author, Tom Jobling, has now completed a full make-over of The Big Event and is re-launching it, again as a free download, via his new website www.tnjobling.com
Consisting of 88 pages it takes it takes readers from the initial notion of their club hosting a sailing event and expertly guides them through the application processes onto a month-by-month, day-by-day journey which is loaded to the gunnels with specific advice, anecdotes, reality check tests, photographs and features several of Tom’s wicked sketchings.
However, this not merely a manual for the beginner: it goes deeper, and looks at pit-falls even the ‘experienced’ organisers fall foul of. It offers planning and risk assessment solutions. It pays particular attention to ‘house keeping’, the welcoming process and devotes a whole chapter to the prize-giving, suggesting that “a little imagination, some razzamataz and a sprinkling of nerve, could transform an otherwise drab affair into an event worthy ending”.
The Big Event also spends time on safety measures, marketing, managing protests, sourcing sponsorship as well slipway management, toilet cleaning, and, the selection of a suitable event chairman. What The Big Event does not do, is get involved in the ‘afloat’ aspect of the weekend, other than ensuring that both wings of the organisation, are inextricably linked – working in harmony.
While The Big Event remains as a 'not for profit' publication, readers who wish to download or use it as a guide are asked make a small donation to Meningitis Now via the link provided on the author's website. Any revenue generated goes directly to the charity, and is recorded in memory of the authors grandson (page 2 explains).
