Can you or someone you know help Save Farmer Ryan?

On the 28th of June 40 to 80 boats will set out from Wicklow Harbour to compete in the round Ireland Yacht Race.

Leading a crew of sixteen will be first time Round Ireland competitor David Ryan. David is making a human interest documentary to be aired on national TV in the autumn about his journey. Sponsorship opportunities are still available for those who would like to get involved in this extraordinary adventure of a lifetime.

David is a farmer and although he lives but four miles from the sea, he has only sailed for the last six years as crew and sometime captain of a ‘Ruffin’. However he has been badly bitten by the siren call of the sea and now dreams of the day he will himself captain a crew across the line.

His aim is to commission a Volvo class 70 ft. racing yacht. Hand pick 11 crew and hold an open competition for three places on the Yacht. Competition will be fierce. There will a selection process to go through that will over seen by Captain Ryan himself. There will be training days, strategy, ocean fitness, navigation, planning, safety and rescue drills to be undergone. The precious Volvo Yacht to be collected from England and then the real race begins to get ocean fit for the adventure of his lifetime.

The Round Ireland is one of the world’s last great adventures and is an untold story. With six tidal gates and the ravages of the Atlantic Ocean to contend with this is not for the faint hearted. Farmer David Ryan is anything but faint hearted.

Then the adventure begins, four to five days to lead his crew against professional crews from around the globe through some of the most exciting seas in the world. There will be a cameraman onboard filming the action as it happens and 20 Go Pro cameras mounted to capture every astonishing minute. Filming for this one-hour documentary will follow the story from the start meeting David and his family on their  farm outside Wicklow. We will see him sailing small craft with his son and meet the members of the WSC and learn of the perils of the race and hear stories of previous close shaves from Sailors who have previously entered the race. Filming will include the build up to the race including David’s personal selection process and then follow him on the Journey of his life.
