Today the Irish Sports Council (ISC) announced an investment plan for sport for 2014. This investment included the allocation of €7m to 18 high performance sports including sailing. Sailing received the third highest level of funding after boxing and athletics, and the same amount as Paralympics.
Commenting on the announcement ISA Performance Director James O’Callaghan stated “The level of funding received from the Irish Sports Council is a reflection of the success of our high performance athletes on an international stage. Last year our sailors won 13 medals, 8 of which were Gold at international events. This is a clear indicator of the success of the pathway programme”.
The ISA also received a total of €316,400 to support the ISA in the development of the sport nationally in 2014. €18,000 of this is ring-fenced for Women in Sport and the ISA's WOWI programme.
There are 102 sailors training as part of the ISA Performance Pathway Programme starting from the junior classes through to the Olympic classes. All these sailors are closely monitored and follow strength and conditioning programmes managed by Sports Med Ireland physiotherapist Mark McCabe in addition to receiving regular coaching from top international coaches.
In addition to ISC funding, the Irish Olympic Sailing Team has agreed a four-year title sponsorship deal with Providence Resources Plc. to assist in the pursuit of success at the Rio 2016 Games and the team is now titled ‘Providence Team IRL’. Gul is technical clothing partner for all teams under the ISA Performance Programme supplying the sailors with sailing clothing.
2014 is a key year in the Olympic cycle as the first Olympic qualifier will be held in Santander, Spain in September. The target for Providence Team IRL is to qualify the nation in all classes that they participate in.
In 2013 ISA Performance also secured a sponsor with VeloRevolution that supply custom cycling and triathlon clothing. VeloRevolution supply Providence Team IRL and the Performance Development Squad with high quality cycling gear as used by the Tour de France riders so they can feel great and train hard when out on the bike.
