David Kenefick from Royal Cork Yacht Club has been awarded the coveted prize of Rookie Champion of the “Championnat de France de Course au Large” which simply put means he’s the French Rookie Champion for solo offshore racing in 2013. The prize giving will take place this December at the Paris Boat Show.
The 22 year old only tried shorthanded sailing for the first time during the summer of 2012 and it took just 30 minutes for him to decide he wanted to do more and invest time and energy into the Figaro scene. In October of that year Kenefick chartered Figaro No. 45 and began five months of coaching in the South of France at the Centre d’Entrainement Mediteranée. Following a few events in spring of 2013 David qualified for the Solitaire Du Figaro and there his story really began. David finished the gruelling 2,000 mile race in 28th place becoming the fourth and youngest-ever Irish skipper to finish this legendary race. Next on the list was the Generali Solo where David finished and impressive 12th overall and 1st Rookie. It was a culmintation of these two results that earned him the title of 2013 Rookie Champion. The championship this year was run over the Transat Bretagne Martinique, Solitaire du Figaro and the Generali Solo although David didn’t compete in the Transat Bretagne Martinique.
