David Kenefick, sailing his yacht ‘Full Irish’, has just completed the first leg of the 44th Solitaire du Figaro in 3 days, 7 hours, 30 minutes and 55 seconds leaving him 33rd overall. The ambitious 22 year old is the first Irish sailor in many years to have taken on the gruelling month-long challenge that will see him battle it out for 1,938 miles.
This year 41 sailors have entered the race. Among them are six past winners, six non-French skippers, seven newcomers and one female sailor. The race schedule is arduous. Having begun in Bordeaux on June 2nd the sailors made their way 536 miles to Porto. Stage two will begin on June 8th from Porto to Gijón. After two rest days the sailors will then tackle the third stage from Gijón to Roscoff and they will need all their strength to battle it out for the final 514 miles from Roscoff to Dieppe.
