The second event of the season was completed in RCYC Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th May. There were six magnificent races over the two days and Race Officer Jimmy Nyhan and team recorded gusts at 30knots from the committee boat Saturday afternoon. The conditions were challenging for both competitors and race management. The fleet travelled from the Galway Bay SC, Blessington and Ballyholme to compete.
Although there was numerous capsizes, there were no real breakages to report. Dermott Mc Hugh and Hugh Byrne on the Hobie Wildcat sliced a log on a downwind leg and sheered the dagger board clear off but it didn’t prevent them from finishing the series. Jim Sheeran and Dave Mc Gowan caught the best of the squalls and landed through the mainsail on a very spectacular pitchpole. Tim Breen and Ger Murray from Galway paid dearly with an OCS in Race 1 for being too eager on the start line. There was an excellent turnout of four Youth sailors from RCYC on the water in the 16ft Spitfire fleet. The Youth team of Cian Byrne and David Whittaker RCYC made their second appearance of the season and proved they could rise to the challenge of the big breeze event, showing exceptional boat handling skills.
Racing was tight and the results show the same, as no one boat dominated the event. The Ballyholme team of Adrian and Barry claimed three first places and Wyatt and Patrick from Blessington followed them with two well deserved victories as they showed exception boat speed all weekend.
