Wicklow County Council and Sispar are delighted to announce the appointment of BJ Marinas to provide berthing facilities and operate the marina at Greystones Harbour.

Work will begin on the marina facilities early in the New Year with a view to having 100 berths available from April next year. The number of berths provided will eventually reach 230.

This will be a major boost for the Greystones Harbour development. Last year saw the opening up of the entire southern end of the harbour to the public and the completion and handover of the boat storage pens to local community clubs. Two new slipways were completed for use by the clubs and boating community along with a dedicated coastguard slipway. This latest development in relation to the marina is another major step forward.

“We are very pleased to be able to announce this important step forward for the project”, according to Paraic Keogh of Sispar. “The economics of the development have been severely affected by the downturn but this is a major boost and will further bring the harbour area to life in 2013.”  The Greystones Harbour development is a public private partnership between Sispar and Wicklow County Council. Sispar has so far invested close to €75m in the project.

According to Bernard Gallagher of BJ Marinas: “We are delighted to have been chosen by Sispar and Wicklow County Council to head up this project. It is a unique and stunning site and the new marina will bring locals and tourists to this beautiful destination on the east coast of Ireland. It will be a big boost to the local economy and we are looking forward to being part of the local business community.”

The Mayor of Greystones Councillor Kathleen Kelleher also welcomed the announcement. “This will open up an increased area of the development for marine activities and will give local boat owners, who are currently using berthing facilities elsewhere, an opportunity to keep their boats in Greystones. The inclusion of visitor berths will add to the existing list of significant tourist attractions in Greystones.   It is further evidence of the commitment of all concerned to progress the development to a successful completion"

Greystones Harbour Marina in County Wicklow will open next April with 100 berths initially. BJ Marinas is which  owned by senior marine industry figure Bernard Gallagher whose company BJ Marine has been in business for 35 years, will operate the marina and boatyard on the purpose built site under contract from developers Sispar and Wicklow County Council. . The Malahide based company also operates Bangor Marina boatyard on Belfast Lough and has operated an international base in Malta since 1989.

Last March a meeting of local boat owners in the Wicklow town heard of ‘huge interest' in the new facility. Up to 150 people attended the meeting and over 70 signed expressions of interest in a berth were received.

BJ Marinas Ltd will be responsible for the installation of the marina. The marina furniture and piling will be 100% Irish built and supplied according to Gallagher.
