Minister of State for Tourism & Sport Michael Ring has today announced grants totalling €2.6 million to allow 22 national sports bodies, including the ISA, to buy new equipment, boost participation and improve performance building on the success of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The ISA was awarded a grant of €400,000 from a €650,000 application towards capital equipment applied for under the Department of Transport Tourism and Sport’s Capital Programme.

We are delighted that the recent successes from our Olympic Programme have been formally acknowledged and that the recognition from both the Irish Sports Council and the Department of Sport of our excellent governance and implementation of our strategic aims has resulted in such a significant award to help us further improve performance and to facilitate our Clubs and Training Centres to introduce new comers to the sport locally.

Sailing is a very capital intensive sport with the cost of purchasing boats and equipment being one of the main barriers to increasing participation and improving performance.

These funds will be used to provide access to boats and equipment to our members helping increase participation and to further improve on the successes of our Olympic Programme as we start the cycle towards Rio in 2016.

Under the performance aspect, funds will be spent on coaching equipment including coach
boats, vehicles and training equipment, Olympic sailing equipment including a fleet of 420’s, Laser Radials and a 49er with associated spares for National, Academy and Senior Squad training camps and training camp equipment which includes strength and conditioning apparatus to be used on training camps.

Relating to participation, we received funding for four mobile training fleets for use on introductory ISA training programmes. This is a resource the ISA has been seeking for a number of years in order to provide further support for organisations looking to develop their junior, schools and introductory adult programmes. With the experience the ISA has gained from the management of SailFleet, these mobile dinghy fleets will be a huge asset to the Irish sailing community.
