An Irish team has won the British Schools Dinghy Team Racing Championships for the 2nd time in three years while sailing at Bough Beech Reservoir, Kent. Team members, all students of Schull Community College, overcame stiff opposition in the overall final beating the Magdalen College, Oxford, by 2 races to nil. Having finished the runners up in 2011 the team were keen to avenge last year’s final defeat.
Competing against the elite team racing traditions of Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, and Magdalen College along with 20 other top qualifying teams, the Schull team had the perfect performance in Day 1. Here they achieved a 100% record winning all 12 races from a total of 132 races completed. This put them in pole position overnight with Magdalen College in close 2nd with only two losses to the Irish representatives. The remarkable statistic of the days racing was the manner in which the Schull team achieved their 100% record as they had the perfect 1,2,3 finishing position in all but 2 of these races. The final day of the event was subjected to heavy and continuous rain which made for difficult sailing as the breeze was also very light.
The two best sides in the competition met twice throughout the days sailing with the British team having the initial upper hand beating Schull in the earlier phases of racing setting up an overall final showdown between both teams. At this critical stage of the event the West Cork students were extremely focused, winning the first race of the final sequence in a 1, 3,4 order and then securing overall victory in Race two with a 1,4,5 combination.Team members:
