It’s not just the Volvo Ocean Racing boats that will be racing in Galway Bay during the Volvo Ocean Race Grand Finale. Galway Bay Sailing Club in association with Galway Harbour Company will be hosting the GB012 Regatta on Monday, Wednesday, & Thursday the 2nd, 4th, & 5th July. A one day break in the Regatta will be held on Tuesday 3rd July to allow all attention to focus on the arrival of the Volvo Boats on their last leg from Lorient, France.
Galway Bay Sailing Club are expecting up to 50 boats to compete in the GB012 Regatta. While Galway will be well represented with our fleet of regular sailors, we will also see visitors from Westport, Clifden, Foynes, Fenit, Kilrush and the UK. There will be four classes in the event to accommodate boats of all shapes and sizes from lean racing machines to classic yachts and gentlemen & lady sailors.
Race entrants will be staying in Galway Harbour courtesy of the Galway Harbour Company during the Regatta, and the large and varied selection of boats will add to the atmosphere and spectacle of the Volvo Ocean Racing festival. At the end of each day’s racing over 200 thirsty sailors will descend on the docks to add colour and craic to the proceedings. The action begins on Monday 2nd July with the first race scheduled for 4.30 pm and racing resumes at 10.30am on both Wednesday 4th, & Thursday 5th July. Racing will take place between Oranmore in the East and Salthill in the West, and the sight of such a large fleet racing out on the Bay will be well worth a stroll on Salthill prom.
It all starts with a parade of sail into Galway Harbour on Sunday 1st July at 4.30pm which will be attended by entrants of the GB012 Regatta and led by the iconic Galway Hookers.
