The Round Ireland Race started at 1200 on Sunday 24th June in a light North Westerly with 36 starters.

Cavatina was first over the line with Cracklin Rosie next at the committee boat end and Pyxis at the ODM followed by Tonnerre de Breskens. Noonmark VI started on a starboard gybe and forced Lee Overlay Partners to gybe onto starboard as well. Cracklin Rosie and Joker started in clear air at the port end of the line following which Joker and Fortisimo gybed out to sea into clear air. After the start Green Dragon gybed back and stormed into middle of fleet. After Wicklow Head Green Dragon was doing 18 knots and Lee Overlay Partners 14 knots with Tonnerre fairly near the front of fleet as well. Unfortunately 10 minutes after the first boats rounded Wicklow Head the wind went ahead causing the boats to take their spinnakers down and continue on a two sail reach.
