What a better ad for the 470 than Ger Owen qualifying for his 3rd Olympics with the promising 19 year old Scott Flannigan on the wire! The partnership sailed an excellent spring with 2 gold fleet finish at world cups before securing their spot to London at the Worlds. This is the perfect opportunity to launch the re-birth of the the 470 class association of Ireland after over 30 years of absence. Indeed, after 3 years of active representation abroad from various teams, a few Irish 470 sailors have decided to create the association and race locally. Two "nationals" were sailed in 2010 and 2011 alongside the 420s and the "fleet" can now account for 6 boats and hopes to grow.

The 470 is the perfect option for an exciting boat which can be sailed at club level all the way to the Olympics... We hope to launch a local circuit of Irish meetings combining training and races concluding with an open nationals towards the end of the summer. As much as possible dates and locations will be alongside the 420 class. Ideally suited as the next step to the 420 for light weight youth sailors, it is also a great boat for more experienced sailors and the Masters European cup is an event not to miss for the Over 35... With manageable power, the ideal combined weight ranges from 125 to 150 Kgs allowing lighter and mixed partnerships to enjoy competitive sailing.

2nd hand boats are available on the UK and French market and most boats, when well cared for, will give you years of great fun. Gear and sails can easily be found at very reasonable prices. Locally, Curradinghy and Thomas Chaix sailing can assist you in finding boats and gear suiting your budget and your expectation. So why not considering the 470 as a viable alternative for your after-youth sailing fun or if you find the laser or the Fireball a bit of a handful, drop some power without dropping the entertainment.
