On Day 4 of the Trofeo Princesa Sofia ISAF World Cup in the Bay of Palma, Mallorca today, light winds this morning gave rise to another postponement however when racing commenced James Espey from Ballyholme Yacht Club in the Laser class finished 5th in the first race of the day. This has been a good event for the Olympic hopeful who finished top 10 in 4 of the 8 races so far leaving him lying 21st in the 138 strong fleet. This is Espey’s last event before the Laser World Championships in Germany in May which is his last chance of qualifying for the Olympics.

Other Irish campaigns hoping to qualify for the Olympics include 470 sailors Ger Owens and Scott Flanigan who made the Gold Fleet lying 43 in the 93 strong fleet in Palma and Finn sailor Ross Hamilton who is lying 49th out of 57.

It was a poor regatta for Laser radial sailor Annalise Murphy who qualified for the Olympics in Perth in December 2011. After a run of successful results over the last 13 month period, Annalise did not reach top form in the challenging conditions but it has been a good learning event for the young sailor.

In the 49er class Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern had great starts in the 12 races completed so far with a number of top 10 finishes.

Commenting on the performance of the Irish sailors at the Trofeo Princesa Sofia, ISA Performance Director James O’Callaghan stated ‘this was a good event for the 470 and Laser campaigns in advance of their Olympic qualifying events in May and hopes would be high that they will qualify for London 2012.  After the highs of Perth results from the Laser and 49er were disappointing however both campaigns have taken away positives from this event’

Racing continues tomorrow in Palma but it is unlikely that any of the Irish sailors will feature in the medal races on Saturday.
