On the weekend of the 10th and 11th of March, the rugged west coast shores of Belmullet, Co. Mayo were descended upon by over 170 students for the 2012 Irish Windsurfing Intervarsities. Listed as an official Seachtain na Gaelige event with Irish folk band Kila providing the entertainment, the weekend was hosted by Colaiste U.I.S.C.E in Belmullet and organised by the Adventure Management students of Dublin based Colaiste Dhulaigh.

The event began with windsurfing tuition from beginners to the advanced windsurfer, slalom racing and demonstrations from some of the top men and women in the sport. Professional windsurfer Mikey Clancy took a break from tackling the tough breaks and rollers of Donegal to offer tuition to the more advanced riders. Alison Beirne from the Irish Sailing Association (ISA) were also on hand as running a range of beginner and intermediate sessions for women under the ISA / Irish Sports Council initiative ‘Women on the Water’. Veteran instructor David Garvey of DMG Sail Sports was also on hand to provide coaching to the more advanced riders.

The slalom racing produced some fantastic viewing with University of Limerick facing tough competition from the other colleges. GMIT, NUI Galway, UCD and Colaiste Dhulaigh all battled for the top spot but it was UL who were crowned the overall winners of the competition. Separately Laura Griffin (GMIT) and Dan Keegan (GMIT) took home the gold in the elite races whilst Orla Riordan (UCD) and Oisin Higgins (UL) took home first place in the Gold Fleet.

The weekend was overseen by the newly ISA affiliated P750 class association, represented by Donnacha MacCobb, who brought three P750 powerboats who provided the safety assistance.
