ISA Know the Ropes Newsletter

Welcome to the December edition of the ISA Staff & Board 'Know the Ropes' Newsletter.

December is set to be an exciting month with the first of the Olympic qualifiers taking place in Perth and the ISA Junior & Girls All Ireland Sailing Championships finally taking place after two previous postponements.

Looking back, November was a busy month for the ISA staff both professinally and personally and of course we have some new additions to the ISA Team...

As always, if you have any news you would like to share please email it to me at by the end of each month for inclusion in next month's edition and of course all feedback or comments are welcome.

ISA Junior & Girls All Ireland Sailing Championships

Following two failed attempts due to the bad weather the ISA Junior & Girls All Ireland Sailing Championships will finally be taking place this weekend in the Royal St George Yacht Club.

18 competitors will be sailing in the club's Fireflies with a crew of their choosing.

Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships

The first Olympic qualifier begins this weekend, the 3rd of December, in Perth at the 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships where nine of our Irish sailors will begin competing for their chance to represent Ireland at next year’s Games.

The Communications Department will be publishing and disseminating daily updates including sound bites and videos of interviews with the sailors which will be conducted by David Branigan who is over in Perth at the request of the ISA.

Follow the updates on the ISA Olympic Facebook page here and on Twitter here.

The ISA Olympic Squad members making the trip to Perth are:
Annalise Murphy (Laser Radial)
Peter O’Leary & David Burrows (Star)
Ryan Seaton & Matt McGovern (49er)

They will be joined by independent Irish Olympic campaigners:
James Espey (Laser)
Ross Hamilton (Finn)
Ger Owens & Scott Flanigan (470)

Also competing in the championships will be our very own Rory Fitzpatrick (49er) however he is not campaigning for the Olympics.

ISA Welcomes Gail MacAllister to the Team

We are delighted to welcome Gail MacAllister to the Team. She will be taking over from Denis Dillon as ISA Regional Development Officer and will begin work with the ISA on Monday the 5th of December.

Gail, who has owned and managed West Cork Sailing & Powerboating Centre & Boat House Café since 1998, has extensive knowledge of the of the ISA, its Clubs, Training Centres and Training Schemes as well as the general marine industry of Ireland, coastline and services. With a background in marketing, Gail has 19 years experience within the sailing industry and will no doubt be an asset to us and our affiliated organisations.

Our ISA Team is expanding even further

The Communications Department have welcomed two new bright and talented young ladies to the team.

Saskia Tidey, a former ISA Academy sailor who is now campaigning with Diana Kissane in the 470 and Rachel Guy who is practically running university sailing in Ireland and recently represented Ireland in the ISAF Team Racing Worlds have joined us as interns.

We're very excited to have the two girls on board and about the projects in store for us in 2012.

Clontarf Flood Defence

In support of the objections of Clontarf Yacht & Boat Club and the other Clubs of North Dublin and Dublin Bay, the ISA has written to Dublin City Council with regards to the proposed flood defence plan for Clontarf Promenade. The County Council did not allow for any public consultation of the plan which involves mounds or walls up to and above 7ft high and does not take into account the amenity value of the promenade and its surrounding waters.

Regional Development News

Ciaran Murphy has been hard at work in the west of the country.

In October, following a significant number of complaints received by Galway County Council, primarily on the issues of camper vans and vessels remaining for extended periods in the vicinity of Kinvarra Pier, the County Council decided to introduce a bye law prohibiting parking of camper vans and yachts on the Kinvarra Pier ‘for the purpose of habitation’.
The ISA Regional Development Team immediately commenced numerous meetings with both councillors and local community groups to protect the interests of visiting boaters. This action resulted with Galway County Council amending their byelaws to allow vessels used for ‘bona fide navigation’ to continue to use the pier for overnight stays.

ISA Mitsubishi Youth National Sailing Championships

Online registration has opened for the 2012 ISA Mitsubishi Youth National Sailing Championships at

As this will be a test event for the ISAF Youth Worlds youth teams from other countries such as Great Britain, New Zealand, Mexico, Japan and Canada have already expressed interest in participating. It will no doubt be an exciting start to a year of international sailing in Ireland.

ISA Training's Alison Beirne is Malahammad Ali

A huge congratulations to Ali who took part in a charity white collar boxing night in the Wright Venue last weekend. The event was in aid of Cystic Fibrosis with all proceeds going to the CF Hopesource Foundation which is currently working to create isolation beds for Cystic Fibrosis patients in Temple St.

Ali and the 29 other fighters together raised €13,000 and even though she drew her fight she was certainly a knock-out!
ISA Representing Hockey?

The ISA can not only hope for a sailing medal at the 2012 Olympics but also a hockey medal.

Good luck to the number 1 goalkeeper in the country, Pamela Smithwick, who is flying off to Argentina on Sunday for two 4 Nations Championships. Pamela is one of the goalies on the Irish Ladies Hockey Team who will be playing eight matches during the 16 day trip. Their opponents include the top ranked team in the world, Argentina as well as South Africa and India.

Best of luck Pamela!

Christmas in India

Also travelling to far away places this December is the Racing Department's Dorleta Rodriguez. Dorleta has left the dreary Irish December weather for sunnier pastures. She has flown out to India where she will be travelling for the next few weeks. We look forward to seeing her back in the office in January.
