14 year old Sophie Browne top girl at Sailing Regatta in Spain
The 61st Trofeo Ciutat de Palma, Mallorca was held this year from the 3rd to the 6th of December in the Real Club Náutico de Palma. An Optimist fleet of 391 boats, from 14 nations, completed nine races over the three day series. The competitors enjoyed some challenging sailing conditions with winds ranging from 10 to 20 knots and choppy seas.
21 young Irish sailors aged 10-14 years travelled to Spain for this major international event. Great results from the Irish juniors with Sophie Browne (TBSC/RCYC) picking up the girls top spot and 4th overall. Other top results were Peter McCann (RCYC) 15th, Sean Donnelly (NYC) 35th and Daniel Raymond (NYC) 49th. The event was a great success with 16 of our sailors finishing in the top half of the fleet, 3 race wins and 25 top ten results.
This was a successful training event for Sophie in preparation for the World Championships in New Zealand in early January 2012.
