The Irish Coast Guard and the Irish Aviation Authority have issued notices about the hazards associated with the launching of sky lanterns.

According to both groups lanterns can pose a risk to aviation and a nuisance to rescue services when they are mistaken for distress flares. They may also pose a risk outside of aviation such as a fire hazard to land and property and an ingestion hazard to livestock.

The ISA asks that anyone considering using lanterns over the festive season and beyond should read the information leaflet available below before purchasing or using lanterns.
