As a result of a successful local campaign and with the support of the National Executive of the IWAI, the RNLI has agreed to establish a local lifeboat service on Lough Ree. The IWAI has offered space on its site at Dunrovin for the eventual permanent station premises.

The local organising commitee under the auspices of the local IWAI branch, consisted of Dave McCabe, Damien Delany, Brian Corcoran, Vincent Rafter and Denis Bergin. Over 100 local volunteers are potential lifeboat operatives and helpers.

It is hoped that the service will be operational for the 2012 season.
