George Kenefick of Royal Cork Yacht Club is the 2011 Waterways Ireland ISA Sailing Champion. Fellow Corkonian Mark Mansfield finished in second place and ISA Olympic Squad member Ryan Seaton took the bronze in what was an incredibly close competition.

The youngest of the helms, at just 23, Kenefick was up against some tough opposition. Mansfield, who also hails from Royal Cork, has 41 years of sailing experience including having represented Ireland in four separate Olympic Games. He is also no stranger to the ISA Helmsman’s Trophy having won it twice before in 1990 and 1999 but Kenefick, although young, has been sailing for 20 years. At the age of 3 his father, Neil Kenefick, put him in an Optimist, tied a rope to it and let him drift around in Crosshaven. As his skills developed, he progressed through the ranks of competitive sailing, notably winning the ISA Junior All Ireland Sailing Championship in 2006 and most recently helming the winning boat in the 2011 Half Ton Cup.

Kenefick and Mansfield sailed consistently during the eight races of the windward/leeward course and remained at the top of the leader board throughout. Kenefick and his crew Mel Collins and John Downey had led the fleet until the 7th race but then a slight slip saw them finish in third position while Mansfield won. This then meant that for the first time within the championship, and with only one race to go, Mansfield was top. Instinctively capitalising on this pressure, as only a gifted sailor can, Kenefick sailed a beautiful last race and won his fourth race of the championship. It were these bullets that ultimately won the ISA Helmsman Trophy for him. Tied with Kenefick, also on 12 points, was Mark Mansfield but unfortunately Mansfield lost the tiebreak as he only had won three races.

Technical Difficulties

Unfortunately we are experiencing difficulties when updating the ISA website. We apologise for the delay in posting results.
Three races have been completed so far in today’s final of the Waterways Ireland ISA Sailing Championship and it is two Corkonians who are battling at the top of the leader board. The youngest helm of the competition, George Kenefick, is tied on equal points with Mark Mansfield. ISA 2012 Olympic 49er Squad member Ryan Seaton is following closely behind with 11 points and having won the last race, he is certainly still a contender.

The third race in Flight 2 has been sailed and the eight sailors going forward to compete in tomorrow’s (Sunday) final have been confirmed.

Finishing in second place to his son Nicholas O’Leary for the past three years and eager to claim the title for himself this time was Royal Cork’s Anthony O’Leary but due to an OCS in his second race he unfortunately has not made it through to tomorrow’s final flight, dashing his hopes of retaining the ISA Helmsman Trophy in the O’Leary household for another year.

Determined to retain the title in Cork however will be fellow Royal Corkonians George Kenefick who leads on 4 points and Mark Mansfield, on 5 points. They will be up against stiff competition though from their fellow competitors Flor O’Driscoll from Howth Yacht Club, who is also on 5 points and Ryan Seaton of Ballyholme Yacht Club, who is on 7 points.

With stronger winds forecast for tomorrow it may be a very different days sailing so it’s still all to play for.

Day one of the Waterways Ireland ISA Sailing Championship 2011 began with an early start for some of the sailors as a hopeful crowd descended on Lough Derg Yacht Club at 0600 donning their Irish Rugby jerseys. Unfortunately their optimism was short lived but attentions then quickly turned to the competition at hand.

Following a hearty breakfast, the morning briefing was delivered at 0900 by Ed Alcock, ISA Racing Manager, Geoff O’Donoghue, Principal Race Officer and Ailbe Millerick, Chief Umpire, followed by the boat draw for both Flight 1 and Flight 2.

The eight sailors in Flight 1 and their crew then set about rigging their ISA SailFleet J80 before leaving the Drominer harbour for the windward/leeward course.

The race committee expect to complete the scheduled races in the current west-southwest, 12 knot breeze.

Updates to follow.
