If the vessel is already on another register (e.g UK Part 1 Register of Ships) it must be deleted from that register first. To do this make contact with the relevant register authorities.
Apply to Minister for Marine for approval of the proposed name of your yacht using form GR342 available from your local registrar of Shipping. This is to ensure that there can be no confusion with vessels with the same name. Note that the Minister may deny you permission to use the proposed name if it already exists on the register.
Apply to Marine Survey Office, Department of Transport, Leeson Lane, Dublin 2 to have a vessel surveyed. (form SUR 6). If your yacht is outside the state the surveyor you use must be approved by the Department. The contacts telephone number is: 01 6783400
Make contact with your local Registrar of Shipping through Customs and Excise. It is best to call and see him/her to discuss your application.
Bring with you:
1. Evidence of deletion from other register(if applicable)
2. Evidence of Title – e.g Bill of Sale, builder’s certificate, invoices
3. Declaration of Ownership (witnessed) This form is available from the Registrar and can be completed in his office and witnessed by the Registrar. (proof of identity is required) Or it can be completed elsewhere and witnessed by a suitable person such as a solicitor, bank manager, Garda etc.
You will be asked to declare the name and address of the managing owner (form C&E 677)
The Ship’s official number and tonnage have to be suitably displayed before the vessel is entered in the registry. A Carving and Marking note is issued by the registrar for this purpose. These details must be engraved/carved on the main beam and the name put on the bow and the name and port of registry put on the stern.
